What Everybody Ought to Know About Mosquitoes and Moisture!

Updated: Apr 18, 2022

Each year, the Charleston area is invaded by tree pollen, which generally starts in mid-February, followed soon after by gnats and no see ums and then mosquito season by mid-March. With the hot, humid, and rainy weather that is typical of Lowcountry summers all the way through October, we have little relief from these potentially dangerous insects. Mosquitoes can become a big problem in these conditions, and Arrow Termite & Pest Control is there to help. Here’s why hot weather and heavy rain are so beneficial for mosquitoes.

Rain Produces Breeding Grounds For Mosquitoes

Whenever there is rain in The Lowcountry, puddles are formed. Everything from buckets,

birdbaths to planters fills with water. Since mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water,

wherever rainwater accumulates can develop into a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

So, after a storm, you can usually predict that mosquito populations will increase. However, if rain is constant over several days, it can wash away mosquitoes’ eggs, lessening the immediate impact of mosquito problems. Additionally, damp soil can stimulate hatching of mosquitoes as eggs are oftentimes laid there and can survive when the soil dries out, only to hatch once the soil gets moist again.

Mosquitoes Thrive On Warmer Summer Nights

For a good part of the year mosquitoes are a problem in the Charleston Lowcountry, and control is crucial during the hot, rainy months. Here are some quick tips to keep mosquitoes away from you and your family:

  • Remove any standing water from your property after a storm.

  • Rainwater can collect in birdbaths, flower pots, baby pools, and other locations outdoors – even your driveway.

  • Mosquitoes are most active between dawn and dusk, so do your best to stay indoors.

  • Wear pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and bug spray when you do need to go outside

While these tips won’t completely eliminate your mosquito issues, you can get even greater mosquito control, by contacting a local, dependable and professional pest controller. Arrow offers mosquito control services that can help reduce the number of mosquitoes on your property.
